The Invasion of the Black Flies

Posted by Tricia June 8, 2008

On Saturday, we spent the day along the western side of the Keweenaw peninsula with our end destination being Copper Harbor. We know that June can be a bad month for black flies (or biting flies as they are also called). Every year we forget exactly how bad they can be.

Our stops along the lake shore were short and we had to keep moving or the flies swarmed our legs. My husband tried taking a pic but it came out blurry. I couldn’t stay still enough. The flies were relentless.

We did, however, manage to get a shot of them outside of our car at Hunter’s Point Parking area (not the marina - the other spot more in the woods). It was a bit freaky how they swarmed the car after we got back in it.

I was the only one bitten. My socks were a little too thin and they exploited that weak spot. My son didn’t really enjoy them, though. Thank goodness they will die in a few weeks.
