Snow in July!

Ok, we didn’t exactly have snow. But sure had some showers of white, fluffy stuff not too long ago.

Here’s the culprit…

The cottonwood trees combined with some wind really make it seem like it was snowing in July. To be honest, I’m glad it was this type of “snow.” It’s been a chilly July, so I’ve been wondering if this was a summer where we would get the real stuff!

Enjoying the PastyFest 2009 Parade

For the first time in 12 years, I missed the annual Bridgefest parade. Other commitments prevented us from attending. So we had to make sure we made it to yesterday’s PastyFest parade – our first parade of the year.

The sky looked a little iffy as we walked to our parade viewing spot. It looked like it could start raining at any moment. Luckily, the rain held off for the 20-25 minute parade.

The parade wouldn’t be complete without a float about pasties! This one gave some info on how to make them. Click for larger view.

Then there was a cute float of women making pasties – complete with pasties made out of paper plates along the side of the float.

No parade is complete without some old cars to enjoy (wacky horns and all!).

Then there are the mascots. Toivo the walking, talking pasty was there but he snuck right up on us and startled me and my son when he came up with his hand extended for a handshake. He came out of no where.

But I did manage to snap pics of Elroy and Firepup:

Trucks from the three local fire departments (Calumet, Laurium and Calumet Township) were at the end of the parade. I was only able to get a decent pic of one of them.

It was a nice, small parade and the kids loved the candy. There were plenty of smiles!

Guardian of Lake Superior

Back in early April, there was still plenty of snow on the non-beach areas at Calumet Waterworks Park, with some snow and ice still on the beach. I took some pictures of different things, then decided to sit down on a huge log that had washed up on the beach.

I took our camera and just held it down by the ground and took random pictures at different angles. Imagine my surprise when I downloaded the pictures and saw this one showing the root of the log I was sitting on.

I definitely see a face in the log…

A Pic of $3.999 Gas and…Spring??

In a follow-up to gas hitting $3.999/gallon, here’s a pic taken yesterday in Calumet.

This is the BP Station and Pamida in the background. Of course, the gas price is the focus of the picture but there are a few other things going on as well.

Pamida is ready for summer and their greenhouse is in full swing. As soon as we see those makeshift greenhouse spring up, it’s pure excitement because summer is a-comin’! But wait…it’s hard to tell in this picture unless it is blown up, but the Superior National Bank sign is displaying 30 degrees! Yikes!

Things were warmer today, but still below normal. I heard today that those on the West coast are in a bit of a heatwave. That sure isn’t the case in the Copper Country LOL.
