Thimbleberry Time!

Posted by Tricia August 19, 2008 (1) Comment

I could have sworn that thimbleberry season was in late July. But we went hiking this weekend and found ourselves in thimbleberry heaven.

We didn’t pick enough to make jam, but we had enough to fill our bellies. They are always a welcome treat!

This year I have been paying close attention to thimbleberry patches during our travels. I think I will give it a shot and try to make some jam next year.

Gas Powered RC Truck + Stamp Sand = Fun

Posted by Tricia August 18, 2008 (1) Comment

We had a friend visit the area not too long ago and he brought his neat gas powered RC truck with him. He fired it up outside of our house and took it for a spin. Wow. That thing could move! And it was super loud! We had him shut it down pretty quickly since we didn’t want to disturb the neighbors.

But we wanted to play with it. The perfect playground? Stamp sand!

We had a blast driving it out there. The truck had a top speed of 45 mph and watching it fly across the sands was amazing. While I love the woods, sometimes having these clear areas are real nice too.

Where in the Copper Country Wednesday – #8

Posted by Tricia August 14, 2008 (2) Comment

I didn’t get one of these posted last week, but Gordy nailed the previous spot quickly. #7’s picture was definitely the Lily Pond Public Access site (for more information on this series, please see the beginning of this post).

I’m a day late for this week’s picture. We suffered an internet outage earlier in the week and that set me behind. So without further ado, here is this week’s picture. I think this one might be an easy one, so no clues this week :-)

Where in the Copper Country is this picture taken?

A Few Pics from a Guest Photographer

Posted by Tricia August 11, 2008 (6) Comment

I have been having a few technical difficulties on here, so I apologize for the lack of posts. Things should be fine now, but if you notice anything funny – feel free to let me know.

Today I thought I would highlight a guest photographer. He likes to photograph things from a low angle (and I did the digital manipulation).

Here’s a few shots of one the locomotives at Quincy Mine:

He also likes to take pictures of “pretty” things:

These pics were taken by our son. I decided that I would let him take our camera and have some fun with it this weekend. He soaked in all of my instruction and started snapping away. This isn’t the first time a photo of his has appeared on here. He contributed a “Where in the Copper Country” shot with the Osceola #13.

As time goes on, he’ll probably be contributing more pictures :-)

Railroad on the Way to Victoria Dam

Posted by Tricia August 4, 2008 (0) Comment

While in Rockland recently, we headed out to Victoria Dam. On the way back, we stopped at the railroad crossing to check it out. We don’t have left near us, and my son just loves trains. Dad and son looked at the railroad while I snapped some pics.

I often wonder if the rising gas prices might bring the railroad back to the Northern Keweenaw. Probably not, but it would be pretty neat if it did happen :-)
